Our Story (so far)
Community Church in Charlottetown’s first Sunday worship service was on November 3rd, 2002. Our story starts before that though.
We started as a ‘spin-off’ of the Summerside Community Church. SCC started back in 1997 with Andrew Bryce and Brian Metzger on staff and a great group of people who were excited about seeing what God wanted to do in their city.
About two years into this new work, Brian felt like God spoke into his heart that he would be leading the ‘plant’ of a new church. He wasn’t really in a hurry to believe that was really God’s idea. Brian was pretty comfortable where he was and having a lot of fun doing what he did. But God has a way of making His plans clear. Over the next couple of years Brian kept running into people who said things that reminded him of what God had said and he experienced a change in his own heart about the idea. He became convinced that it really was God’s idea for him to lead a team to start a new church.
At the same time God was working on Brian, He was also preparing a group of people from Charlottetown. A number of people began driving to Summerside from Charlottetown (about 45 minutes away) each Sunday for church. Soon a Home Group was formed in Charlottetown with Greg and Debbie MacKinnon leading it as part of SCC. In 2001, Brian felt God spoke again into his heart to say that this group was that, the new church, He had put in Brian’s heart. After months of prayer and discussion, input and advice, the leaders at SCC, believing this was God’s plan, made plans to support the ‘birth’ of a new church in 2002, a sister for the church in Summerside.
That first Sunday in November, 2002, about 35 brave hearts gathered and were joined by new and old friends and Community Church in Charlottetown was born!
We aren’t part of a denomination but we are connected locally, nationally and internationally by relationships. We draw from those friends and churches we are connected to for their wisdom and experience. God has given us some priceless relationships with friends from the U.K., Ireland, the U.S., all across Canada and especially the Maritimes. We've made all kinds of great friends and had big help in this adventure!
Our story has just started so it's a great time to join in. God has already taken us on some unexpected twists and turns and we're excited to see what happens next!
